The complete Luang Prabang journey — heritage, community, nature and the Mekong

Our fullest programme, giving you a week to move at a genuinely unhurried pace through the temples, workshops, waterways and villages of Luang Prabang province, with two full days given over to community life and craft.

Day 1 — Arrival and Welcome

​On arrival at Luang Prabang International Airport or Luang Prabang Railway Station you will be met by our local team and transferred to the Home Base, where comfortable simplicity meets nature. Set within one of Luang Prabang's large gardens and managed with ecological and environmental care, it is a harbour of peace a short distance from the historic centre.

Here you will meet fellow travellers, settle into your surroundings and receive a short orientation on Lao cultural norms and a handful of Lao expressions, so that from your first morning you are able to greet your hosts in their own language.

Day 2 — Heritage, Craft and the Old Town

Morning: Begin at the Royal Palace Museum, once the residence of the Lao royal family and now the principal repository of the country's royal and religious history. Continue to Wat Xieng Thong, the finest surviving example of classical Luang Prabang temple architecture, celebrated for its sweeping roofline and glass mosaic work.

Afternoon: Lunch at a riverside restaurant overlooking the Mekong, featuring seasonal Lao dishes prepared with local produce. Visit Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham, known for its gilded bas-relief façade, then the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre, where the material culture, textiles and customs of Laos's ethnic communities are interpreted with the participation of the communities themselves.

Evening: Climb Mount Phousi for a panoramic view across the peninsula and the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers at sunset. Descend into the night market, where handicrafts and handwoven textiles are sold directly by the artisans and their families, and take dinner among the street-food stalls.

Day 3 — Village Life and Craft Traditions

A morning visit to a village community, arranged with a local weaving cooperative, to meet artisans and learn about their craft and daily life. All activities are structured and guide-led. In line with responsible-tourism guidance on visits involving children in Laos, this itinerary does not place guests in unsupervised contact with pupils or offer informal teaching; guests interested in supporting local education are directed instead to the CBO's established, long-term community programmes.

Afternoon: Lunch at a garden café, followed by a visit to Wat Phon Phao, a peaceful hilltop temple with fine views over the surrounding countryside.

Evening: In the dry season, end the day with a walk across the seasonal bamboo bridge over the Nam Khan — rebuilt by hand by the same families each year after the floodwaters recede. Dinner at a restaurant blending traditional Lao flavours with contemporary technique.

Day 4 — Waterfalls and Silver

Morning: Travel to Kuang Si Waterfall, the most striking natural site in the province, where limestone terraces hold a series of turquoise bathing pools. You may swim, walk the forest path to the upper falls, or visit the bear rescue centre, which cares for Asiatic black bears recovered from the illegal wildlife trade. The Butterfly Park sits at the entrance to the falls and makes a pleasant, unhurried stop before or after your visit.

Afternoon: A picnic lunch at the falls, then a visit to a village of silversmiths, where artisans hammer and stamp silver and nickel by hand; a short workshop introduces the fundamentals of this centuries-old craft. Time permitting, take in one or two of the old town's heritage museums on the return.

Evening: Dinner at a traditional Lao restaurant.

Day 5 — The Mekong and Its Crafts

Morning: A boat journey up the Mekong to the Pak Ou Caves, where thousands of Buddha images have been placed by generations of pilgrims. Afternoon: Lunch at a riverside restaurant, then Phosy Market for a look at the province's everyday trade in fresh produce and household goods, followed by the Ock Pop Tok Living Crafts Centre for a hands-on weaving or natural-dyeing workshop with resident master weavers.

Evening: Unwind with a traditional Lao massage, then close the day with a dinner cruise on the Mekong, taking in the river at its most tranquil.

Day 6 — Sunrise, Alms and Elephants

Before dawn: Climb Mount Phousi for sunrise over the old city, then observe Tak Bat, the daily almsgiving procession in which the town's monks receive offerings from residents. This is an act of living faith rather than a performance; we accompany you with clear guidance on respectful distance, dress and photography so that your presence supports the ritual rather than intrudes upon it.

Morning: A visit to one of the town's morning markets, followed by breakfast at a riverside café and a stop at Wat Siphouthabath, a quieter temple away from the main tourist routes.

Afternoon: Lunch at a local eatery, then an afternoon at MandaLao, an ethical elephant observation centre focused on rescue and rehabilitation rather than riding.

Evening: A farewell dinner at one of Luang Prabang's finest restaurants, with time afterwards for a final visit to the night market.

Day 7 — Departure

Breakfast at the Home Base and transfer to Luang Prabang International Airport or Luang Prabang Railway Station.

Notes

• Maximum group size is 10 guests.

• Rates are valid until 30 September 2026 and are quoted per person on a twin-share basis; a single supplement applies for solo travellers.

• Minor changes to the programme are occasionally necessary depending on road and weather conditions. We make every effort to minimise such changes, which are at times beyond our control.

• Tak Bat is observed respectfully and at a distance appropriate to a living religious practice; guests do not participate directly in the ceremony.
